On most of these measures it sits just behind wall balls, which is the biggest station at 7.8% of a finish against this one's 6.6%. The difference that matters is not size, it is position. Wall balls is the last thing you do; this is the fourth of eight, and a blow-up here still has four runs and four stations to spread into. The tail shows it: the median is 6:10, the 99th percentile is 16:04 — 2.6× the median — and the slowest set we hold is 50:22, about 8× the median.

The station where strength points the wrong way

Fast athletes are fast at everything, so comparing raw station times tells you nothing. Removing each athlete's finish-time trend first leaves the real question: does being relatively good at one station predict being relatively good at another? The largest number in that row is -0.157, against sled push — negative, and the most negative pair anywhere in our matrix. Athletes who are relatively good at the sled push tend to be relatively worse here. (Sandbag lunges is the other station whose strongest link is negative, but its partner is the SkiErg and the relationship is weaker.) The best positive relationship it has is rowing at +0.123, which is close to nothing: the SkiErg and rowing machine predict each other at +0.603, roughly 3.8× stronger than anything this station has in either direction.

A reading, not a finding. The obvious explanation is body mass — the athlete built to shift a loaded sled has more of themselves to lift 80 m, and the sled push is plausibly the station where raw mass helps most. That story fits, but we cannot test any part of it: we hold no height, weight or body-composition data. What is measured is the correlation. The explanation is a hypothesis, and you should treat it as one.

Either way the practical consequence is the same, and it is the same as wall balls: you cannot infer your number here from anything else you do. General fitness will not tell you, and neither will being strong. The only way to know what 80 m costs you at station 4 is to do 80 m with three stations and 3 km already behind you.

Distance and standards

OFFICIAL RULE

80 m, in every division. No load, no scaling, no difference between open and pro or men and women. Together with the rowing machine it is one of only two stations where nothing at all changes between divisions — everywhere else, something does.

The movement standard is the part that costs people time rather than the distance. Chest and thighs to the floor on every rep, both feet leaving and landing together on the jump, and the jump measured from where your feet land — so a rep that does not travel forward does not count toward the 80 m. Judges watch this station closely, and a no-rep here is a whole burpee's worth of work returned for nothing.

Technique

COACHING CONVENTION

Accepted practice rather than something we have measured. We separate the two on every page so you can weigh them differently.

Short jumps, high turnover

The station is scored on time over a fixed distance, not on how far each jump travels. Two short jumps at a rhythm you can hold almost always beat one long one that forces a breath and a re-set. Faster athletes here look metronomic rather than explosive.

Never stand all the way up

Come up only as far as the jump requires. Full extension between reps is a movement you are performing dozens of times for no distance, and it is the single most common place athletes donate seconds without noticing.

Land feet together, hip-width

A wide or staggered landing forces you to square up before dropping again, adding a step to every rep. Landing where you can immediately go back down is worth more than landing a little further forward.

Step back rather than drop, when you fade

As the legs go, stepping the feet back into the burpee costs less than a collapsing drop that you then have to push out of. It looks slower and usually is not.

Breathe on a fixed count

This is the most aerobically expensive floor station of the eight. Pick a breathing pattern at the first rep and hold it. When athletes blow up here it is almost always breathing that went first, not legs.

Keep the hands close

Hands landing under the shoulders rather than out in front keeps the push-out short and the hips high, which is what lets you get back to the jump without a full stand.

Pacing it inside the race

COACHING CONVENTION

The thing that makes this station dangerous is not its size — it is 6.6% of a finish, second to wall balls's 7.8%. It is that it is the fourth of eight. A wall-ball blow-up costs you wall balls. A blow-up here costs you the sled-free half of the race: four runs, and four stations, all taken on legs you spent at station 4.

That is the most plausible reading of why the field spreads 2.65× here, wider than anywhere else. The gap between a sub-60 finisher's 2:50 and a 90+ finisher's 7:29 is far more than a fitness difference of that size should produce over 80 m. Much of it is the cost of arriving with a pace you cannot hold and then paying for it for the rest of the race.

So the useful instruction is a conservative one, and it is unusual advice for a station this early: go slower than feels right. The rhythm that is correct at station 4 will feel comfortably under-cooked, because it has to survive four more runs. And since nothing else in your race predicts this station, the pace you plan should be one you have actually measured on tired legs rather than one you inferred.

  • Jumping for distance — the station is 80 m of forward progress, not a long-jump competition; big jumps buy metres and cost the legs you still need for four runs
  • Standing fully upright between reps — every extra inch of standing is repeated dozens of times — come up only as far as the jump needs
  • Going out at your fresh burpee pace — this arrives at station 4 with half the race left; the pace that feels right here is almost always too fast
  • Chest-to-floor sloppiness — a no-rep here costs a full burpee, and judges watch this station closely
  • Letting the feet land wide — a wide landing forces a hip re-set before the next rep and quietly adds a movement to all of them
  • Holding your breath through the jump — this is the most aerobically expensive floor station of the eight; breathing is the pace limiter, not the legs
  • Treating it as a strength station — it is the least strength-linked station we measure — being strong elsewhere does not carry over
  • Assuming your gym numbers transfer — it comes after 3 km of running and three stations, which is why the slowest recorded set is 50:22

  • Small jumps, high turnover — consistent short reps beat long ones — the clock rewards rhythm, not distance
  • Pick a rhythm you can hold to 80 m — the field spreads more here than anywhere; most of that spread is pacing
  • Stay low between reps — the cheapest seconds on this station are the ones you never stand up for
