HYROX running
Eight kilometres, one at a time, each one paid for by the station that follows it. It is 48.5% of a solo finish — roughly 6 times the share of wall balls, the most expensive station on the floor — and it is the only part of the race you can already benchmark, because you have almost certainly run a 10K or a half marathon.
Which makes running the one segment where a guide can tell you something specific before you have ever raced. Two things below do that: what athletes with your road-race fitness actually run per kilometre here, and what going out too hard costs — measured against athletes who opened at exactly the same pace you did, so the answer is not just "slower people finish slower".

How fast is HYROX running pace?
MEASUREDThe median solo athlete runs 5:40/km across the eight legs. On its own that number tells you very little, because running pace is the single thing that most separates this field: athletes finishing 60–70 minutes average 4:10/km, while those finishing 90+ average 6:25/km — 2:15 per kilometre apart. So the useful answer is not the median. It is the pace that goes with the finish you are chasing.

Doubles pace is the team's — both partners run every kilometre, so unlike the station figures this one is comparable to solo. Doubles teams run faster at matched finish times because they rest through their partner's station shifts.
Why it beats your half-marathon pace
Athletes assume HYROX running is slower than road running — eight stations, tired legs, indoor corners. In the paired data it is the other way round, at every level. Eight separate kilometres with a station between each let you hold something you could never hold continuously, and the effect grows the slower your road pace, because a slower half marathon leaves more headroom in a single kilometre.

Road pace is half-marathon pace; 10K times are Riegel-converted before matching. Each division is shown across the road paces its own curve was fitted on, so read the two tables down rather than across — the rows do not line up. Fitted on 1,980 athletes with both a road result and a HYROX result — Open Men n=320, Open Women n=147. Ratios outside 0.6–1.4 are excluded as something-went-wrong races rather than fast or slow ones. Pro Women borrows the Open Women curve — only 10 matched athletes, too few to fit its own.
Nobody runs even splits
MEASUREDMedian run 1 is 5:12. Median run 8 is 6:51 — a 1.32× drift across the field. Follow individual athletes instead and the typical one fades 1.3×; the field-wide figure is steeper because the athletes still out on course by run 8 are disproportionately the ones having a bad day. Either way it is the middle of the field, not the tail. Plan the shape rather than pretending it won't happen.

Run 8 is the outlier in both directions: it is the slowest leg for most athletes, and the one people most often try to rescue. Quartiles of the fade ratio: 1.2× at the flattest, 1.3× median, 1.6× at the steepest, 1.9× at the 90th percentile.
What going out hard costs
MEASURED"Don't go out too fast" is the oldest advice in endurance sport and almost never quantified. Here it is. Athletes are split into the flattest-fading quartile (≤1.2×) and the steepest (≥1.6×), then compared only against others who opened run 1 at the same pace — so this is not the trivial finding that fitter athletes finish sooner.

Run 8 is not where the damage is
A steep fader has a slower run 8 by definition, so the gap above would be circular if that were most of it. It isn't. Splitting the 4:30–5:00 band's +26:57:
Going out hard barely shows up as one slow kilometre. It shows up as a slower middle third and, most of all, as 10:25 lost on the floor — at the sleds, the lunges and the wall balls, where a heart rate you spent on run 1 gets charged back with interest.
Pacing it
COACHING CONVENTIONThe data above says what happens. What follows is accepted practice for what to do about it — widely held, not something we measured.
Work backwards from the finish, not forwards from run 1
Take your goal time, subtract honest station estimates and about a tenth for the Roxzone, and divide what's left across eight kilometres. That number is your run budget. Any pace faster than it in the first three runs is borrowed, not banked — the pace calculator does this from the fitted shares.
Let run 1 feel too easy
It is the only kilometre you run on fresh legs in a loud room with everyone around you going too hard. If it feels comfortable you are near the right pace; if it feels good you are probably ten seconds per kilometre too fast.
Train compromised running specifically
Aerobic base sets the ceiling, but this race asks for a narrower skill: running acceptably on legs that have just done something else. Alternating runs with station work — even approximate station work — trains the thing the race actually tests.
Decide your walk rule in advance
If the plan is falling apart, a short deliberate walk through part of a run costs less than shuffling at a pace that is neither running nor recovering. Choosing that rule before the gun beats improvising it at run 6.
Mistakes and takeaways

AVOID
- Opening at your 5 km pace — run 1 is the only kilometre that feels free, and spending it is the most expensive decision in the race
- Treating the runs as recovery — they are 48.5% of your finish — more than any station, by a factor of 6
- Chasing even splits — nobody holds them; the median athlete fades 30% from run 1 to run 8, so plan for it rather than fighting it
- Sprinting the last 200 m into a station — you arrive with a heart rate you then have to pay down on the floor
- Only ever running fresh — a 1 km repeat off the sofa tells you nothing about a 1 km repeat off a sled pull
- Racing the runs, jogging the Roxzone — both are on the clock, and the transitions are the cheaper place to find time
- Building volume without any compromised running — aerobic base is necessary and not sufficient — the skill is running on legs that are already gone
REMEMBER
- Run 1 is a pacing test, not a fitness test — if it feels comfortable you are probably right
- Expect to be faster than your road pace — station breaks buy you something a continuous race does not
- Fade on purpose, not by accident — a planned drift beats a collapse at run 6
- Do station work on tired legs — compromised running is the specific adaptation this race asks for
- Know your run budget before race day — goal finish minus stations minus Roxzone; the calculator does the arithmetic
- Protect the back half — the cost of going out hard lands mostly after run 1 — 10:25 of it on the stations alone

- 48.5% of a solo finish, and 56.3% for doubles teams, where both partners run every kilometre but split the station work. It is comfortably the largest single component — about 6× the share of wall balls, the most expensive station. Median solo pace across 39,247 results is 5:40/km.
- Is HYROX running pace slower than road running pace?
- Usually faster, which surprises most athletes. Because the 8 km comes in eight separate kilometres with a station between each, you can hold a pace you could not hold continuously. In our paired data — 1,980 athletes whose road race and HYROX result we can both see — Open Men at a 4:16/km half-marathon pace average 4:11/km in HYROX, and at 7:05/km road pace they average 6:10/km. The slower your road pace, the bigger the gap.
- What is a good HYROX running pace?
- Read it against the finish you want rather than in isolation. Athletes finishing 60–70 minutes average 4:10/km across the eight runs; those finishing 90+ average 6:25/km. The pace that matters is the one that leaves you able to work at the stations.
- How much do HYROX runners slow down by run 8?
- The median athlete's run 8 is 1.3× their run 1 — 5:12 becoming 6:51. The steepest quartile fades 1.6× or worse. Some of that is unavoidable: eight stations have happened in between. The avoidable part is how hard you opened.
- Does going out too fast actually cost you time?
- Yes, and we can separate it from simply being slower. Comparing athletes who opened run 1 at the SAME pace, the steepest-fading quartile finishes 21:06 to 32:17 behind the most even-paced quartile. Run 8 accounts for only a fraction of that — most of the damage shows up in runs 2 to 7 and, above all, at the stations.

Figures pool season 8 and season 9 (52,693 in 8, 40,618 in 9); where HYROX changed a load or rep count between them, those station times are not strictly comparable. Road-pace curves from 1,980 separately matched athletes.
