1,000 m, first station, straight off run 1 — the only point in the race where you arrive genuinely fresh. That makes it the easiest station to overcook, and the one where doing so is least worth it: the SkiErg separates fast finishers from slow ones less than any other station on the course.

Doubles medians are faster because partners split the 1,000 m between them. A doubles SkiErg time is a team result and cannot be compared against a solo one.

How much the SkiErg actually matters

This is the uncomfortable part. Across 39,247 solo results, the SkiErg swings just 1.29× between the fastest and slowest finish brackets — against 2.65× for burpee broad jumps. Drawn on one axis, the difference is hard to argue with:

The middle half of the entire field — every division, every ability — fits between 4:29 and 5:17. Even the 90th percentile is only 5:44. Put concretely: across the brackets with a stable sample, the SkiErg separates fastest from slowest by 1:09 in total, while the gap for burpee broad jumps is 4:40 — roughly 4× more time available to win for the same training effort.

What to do with that. Do not skip the SkiErg — arrive competent and pace it sensibly. But if your training time is finite, spend it where the field actually separates. The station hub ranks all eight by exactly this measure.

COACHING CONVENTION

Mechanics below are widely accepted coaching practice, not something we measured. We have deliberately not published stroke-rate windows or damper numbers, because we have no source for them and an invented range is worse than none.

Drive with your body, not your arms

The power comes from hinging at the hips and driving down through the handles with the lats and trunk, arms acting as the connection rather than the engine. Athletes who pull with the biceps burn out the smallest muscles in the chain and arrive at the sled push with dead arms — which is a real cost, since the push is only two stations away.

Full extension, then let the recovery happen

Finish each stroke with the hands past the hips and the body compressed, then rise and reach without rushing. The recovery is where the aerobic cost is repaid. Snatching the handles back up shortens your stroke and raises your heart rate for no extra distance.

Hold a rhythm you could hold twice as long

You are fresh, the machine is quiet, and there are seven stations to come. The rhythm to settle into is one that feels comfortably repeatable rather than one that produces an impressive split — a sustainable cycle you never have to break, not a fast one you have to abandon halfway.

Set resistance in training, never on race day

Pick a setting where the catch feels firm enough to load your back without the handles stalling and forcing you to rush. Heavier settings suit stronger athletes and punish fatigue; lighter settings reward a quick, steady cycle. Whichever you choose, choose it weeks out and race it unchanged.

Pacing it inside the race

COACHING CONVENTION

Station 1 sits between the freshest kilometre you will run and a sled push that will find any arm fatigue you brought with you. The practical aim is to finish the SkiErg feeling like you could start it again — not to bank a split.

  • Start a touch below the effort you think you can hold. The first 200 m always feels easy; that is adrenaline, not fitness.
  • Aim for an even effort rather than an even split. A slight negative split is a sign you paced it right; a big positive split means run 2 will suffer.
  • Spend the last 100 m thinking about the transition — where your bib is, where the sled lane is — rather than sprinting for a few seconds you will hand straight back.
  • If you are unsure of your target, take your goal finish into the pace calculator and it will apportion your stations and runs from measured shares.

AVOID

  • Racing the machine next to you — everyone is fresh and the splits are visible — going anaerobic here decides stations 2 to 4, not this one
  • Pulling with the arms — drains grip and biceps before the sled pull and farmers carry, both of which need them
  • Bending the elbows early — turns a full-body drive into an arm exercise and shortens every stroke
  • Squatting the stroke — the legs assist the hinge, they do not drive it — this is not a thruster
  • Snatching the recovery — costs you the one part of the stroke where the aerobic bill gets paid
  • Rounding forward at the finish — loads the lower back with seven stations still to come
  • Changing resistance on race day — whatever the last athlete left it on is not a recommendation
  • Over-training the station — the most common misallocation in HYROX prep — 4× more time is waiting on burpee broad jumps

REMEMBER

  • Drive from hips and lats — the arms connect you to the handles, they do not power the stroke
  • Full extension, unhurried recovery — the reach is free speed; rushing it is not
  • Hold a rhythm you could hold twice as long — sustainable beats impressive at station 1

Common questions

What is a good HYROX SkiErg time?
It depends far less on ability than most athletes expect. Solo median is 4:51 for 1,000 m, and the middle half of the whole field sits between 4:29 and 5:17 — a spread of well under a minute across 39,247 results. Athletes finishing in sub-60 minutes post a median of 4:00; athletes finishing 90+ post 5:09. If you are anywhere near 4:51, the SkiErg is not what is costing you time.
How much does the SkiErg matter in HYROX?
Less than any other station. It is about 5.2% of a solo race, and it separates the field by only 1.29× between the fastest and slowest finish brackets — against 2.65× for burpee broad jumps and 2.28× for wall balls. Fast and slow finishers ski at remarkably similar speeds. Time spent chasing a better SkiErg split is usually time better spent on the floor stations.
What damper or resistance setting should I use on the SkiErg?
Use what you have trained on. The setting that suits you is the one where the catch feels firm enough to load your back and lats without the handles slowing so much that your rhythm breaks down. Higher resistance rewards strength and punishes fatigue; lower resistance rewards a fast, sustainable cycle. Race day is the wrong moment to experiment — pick it in training and leave it alone.
How do I train for the SkiErg without one?
Straight-arm lat pulldowns with a rope or bar replicate the pull pattern closely, and banded overhead pull-downs work if you have neither. Neither reproduces the metabolic cost of a full 1,000 m, so pair them with any hard aerobic interval work you can do. Given how little the SkiErg separates the field, an approximate substitute is perfectly adequate here — it would not be for wall balls.
Is the SkiErg the same distance for every division?
Yes. 1,000 m for every division, solo and doubles, at every venue. There is no weight or load to vary, which is part of why it discriminates so little. Doubles teams split the 1,000 m between partners however they choose, which is why their times are faster and are shown separately.
