HYROX wall balls

100 reps, last station, after 8 km of running and everything else. It is the biggest single piece of a HYROX finish, it separates fast from slow finishers by more time than anything else on the floor, and it goes catastrophically wrong more often than any other station. It is also, on the numbers, the station your other results are least able to warn you about.

Doubles medians are faster because partners split the 100 reps between them. A doubles wall-ball time is a team result and cannot be read against a solo one.

The most expensive station, on every measure

Stations can be ranked several ways and they usually disagree — the sled push looks trivial by one measure and alarming by another. Wall balls is the exception. It leads all three.

The tail is the part worth sitting with. The median is 7:17, the 99th percentile is 21:36 — 3× the median — and the slowest set we hold is 88:39, roughly 12× the median. No other station has a failure mode that expensive, because no other station asks you to keep producing power after everything else is already done.

Nothing else in your race predicts it

Fast athletes are fast at everything, so raw station-to-station comparison tells you nothing. Removing the finish-time trend first leaves the question you actually care about: does being good at one of these predict being good at another? For some pairs it strongly does. For wall balls it barely does at all.

The strongest link wall balls has to anything is sled push at +0.248. To see how weak that is, the SkiErg and the rowing machine predict each other at +0.603 — about 2.4× stronger. If you know someone's SkiErg time you can make a decent guess at their row. Knowing all seven of their other stations still leaves you guessing here.

Which has one clear practical consequence. You cannot infer this number, and no amount of general fitness lets you skip finding it out. The only way to know what 100 reps costs you at the end of a race is to do 100 reps at the end of something — and most athletes discover their real number on race day, which is the worst possible place to learn it.

100 reps in every division. The rep count does not change — only the ball does. That makes this the one station where the work is a fixed quantity and the load is the only variable.

Technique

COACHING CONVENTION

Accepted practice rather than something we have measured. We separate the two on every page so you can weigh them differently.

One movement, not two

The squat and the throw are a single action. Athletes who reach the bottom, pause, then stand and throw are doing twice the work: the drive out of the squat is what puts the ball up, and losing that timing turns a leg exercise into a shoulder exercise you cannot sustain for a hundred reps.

Throw through the target

Aim past it rather than at it. Under-throwing is the most expensive error available here, because a no-rep costs the full effort and returns nothing — and it tends to happen exactly when you are too tired to afford repeating it.

Catch soft and reload

Receive the ball high, let it travel down with you, and use it to load the next squat rather than stopping it dead and starting again. Absorbing every rep with the arms is what makes the last thirty feel impossible.

Breathe on a fixed pattern

Pick a breathing rhythm and hold it from the first rep. This is the station where breathing decays first, and once it goes the rest goes with it. A pattern you can keep at rep ninety is worth more than a faster one you lose at forty.

Stand close, stay square

Close enough that the ball goes up rather than out, feet and hips square to the target. Drifting back adds a forward throw to every rep and quietly turns a hundred squats into a hundred squats plus a hundred pushes.

Rest standing, ball down

When you break, put the ball down and shake the arms out rather than holding it at the chest. Holding it is not resting, and the seconds you think you are saving are being spent anyway.

Pacing it inside the race

COACHING CONVENTION

Everything you spent earlier is charged here. That is not a metaphor — it is why the fast-to-slow gap on this station is 4:59, wider than anywhere else. Athletes do not usually lose a race on wall balls because they are bad at wall balls. They lose it because they arrive with nothing left and then have a hundred reps to get through.

The strategy that holds up is breaking the set before you are forced to, in small pieces, at one rhythm. The exact split matters less than choosing it in advance: a plan you picked survives fatigue, a plan your legs pick does not. Athletes who go unbroken until failure almost always spend longer recovering than the planned breaks would have cost — and a missed rep at eighty is far dearer than a ten-second pause at thirty.

And because nothing else in your race predicts this station, the number you should plan around is one you have measured yourself, fatigued, in training. Everything else is a guess.

  • Starting with a big set — the first twenty feel free and the bill arrives at rep forty; nobody has ever regretted breaking early
  • Breaking only when you fail — planned short rests cost seconds, a failed set costs you the rest of the station
  • Squatting slowly to save the legs — depth is not the expensive part — the throw is; a slow squat just extends time under tension
  • Aiming for the target instead of through it — an under-thrown rep is a no-rep, and a no-rep is the most expensive rep there is
  • Catching high and absorbing with the arms — let the ball come to the shoulders and ride it down into the next squat
  • Holding your breath through reps — this station is aerobic by rep thirty whether you planned for it or not
  • Standing still between sets — shake the arms out, breathe, and get back under it — the clock does not pause
  • Assuming your gym numbers transfer — it comes after 7 km of running and seven stations, which is why the slowest recorded set is 88:39

  • Break it up before you have to — a plan you chose beats a plan your legs choose for you
  • Same rhythm every rep — consistency beats bursts; the metronome finishers are the fast ones
  • Throw through the target — no-reps are the only truly wasted energy on the course

Athletes finishing in sub-60 minutes post a median of 3:53; those finishing 90+ post 8:52. That 4:59 gap is the widest of any station — more time separates fast and slow finishers here than anywhere else on the floor.
How many wall balls are in HYROX and how heavy is the ball?
100 reps, in every division — the rep count never changes. Only the ball does: 4 kg for Women Open, 6 kg for Men Open, 6 kg for Women Pro, 9 kg for Men Pro. Women Pro and Men Open throw the same 6 kg ball. That makes this the one station where the work itself is identical across divisions and only the load moves.
Why are wall balls the hardest HYROX station?
Because it is the biggest and the least forgiving. It is 7.8% of a solo race, the largest single station; the gap between the fastest and slowest finish brackets is 4:59, wider than any other; and 5.46% of athletes take more than double the median here, the highest rate on the course. The slowest recorded set is 88:39 — about 12× the median. It is also last, so every earlier decision arrives with you.
Can I predict my wall ball time from my other stations?
Barely, and that is the most useful thing on this page. Should I break up the 100 reps?
Almost certainly, and before you have to. The pattern that survives contact is small planned sets with short rests, held at the same rhythm from the first rep to the hundredth. Athletes who go unbroken until failure typically spend longer recovering than the breaks would have cost, and a failed rep at eighty is far more expensive than a ten-second pause at thirty. Exactly where you break is individual — which is why practising the full 100 fatigued matters more than any prescribed scheme.
